Short description
The city arose in 862 on the land where the Finno-Ugric peoples used to live. By the name of one of the tribes - Murom - the settlement got its name. For a long time, Murom was an extreme outpost of eastern Russia, which took blows from those who went to war against it.

The oldest Orthodox monastery - Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery located on the left bank of the Oka. According to local legend, it was founded by the son of the Kiev prince Vladimir - the Murom prince Gleb in 1015, but historians believe that this happened later - in 1096.
