In the depths of the modern Art Square, in the historical center of Ivanovo, there is an amazing architectural monument preserved from the 17th century - the Shchudrovskaya tent. She is in this city - a real old-timer and one of its recognizable symbols. Interestingly, other examples of pre-Petrine civil construction today cannot be found not only in the Ivanovo region, but also in neighboring regions. Therefore, the old building is truly unique and of great historical value.
The history of the Shchudrovskaya tent
The stone building was built at the end of the 17th century for the command hut. That was the name of the rural administrative center at that time. The surrounding lands in those days belonged to the princes of Cherkassk. Representatives of this rich and respected family in Russia owned the village from 1638 to 1743, that is, for more than a century. And then Ivanovo became property Counts Sheremetyevs.

The place where the command hut was erected was in the valley of the Kokuy stream - the right tributary of the Uvodi river. It is noteworthy that in those days, right in front of the facade of the building, there was a ravine, along which a small unnamed tributary of the Kokuy stream flowed. Now there are houses of Krasnogvardeyskaya Street.
Inside the stone building, there were two rooms of different sizes. Large in size served for receiving visitors and storing documents - registration books, where they noted the size of the quitrent levied from serfs. A small room was given to a clerk, who was hired by the owners of the village - the princes of Cherkassk.

In the first half or in the middle of the 19th century, Osip Ivanovich Shchudrov became the new owner of the brick building. He came from serfs and became rich by trading. In those days, textile manufactories were actively developing in Ivanovo. Therefore, two more floors were added over the one-story building, and it became three-story. On the second floor, a calico printing production was organized - on printed tables, patterns were manually printed on fabric with boards. And on the very top floor, made in the likeness of a spacious attic with large windows, ready-made fabrics were dried in the air using special hangers.
After some time, the Shchudrovskaya print shop was closed, and in 1912 his heirs began to lease the building. Initially, cotton wool was produced in a brick house, and later warehouses were located here. In this state, the tent existed until the revolutionary events of 1917. In the 20s of the last century, the old building received the status of an architectural monument, and it was decided to renovate it.

The history of the restoration of the Shchudrovskaya tent stretched over many years and even decades. Perhaps not a single historical monument of the Ivanovo region has been restored for such a long time. The main restoration work began in 1964. However, this was not done very well. Experts decided that the tent had sunk into the ground for three centuries and dug up the first floor of the building. Indeed, the old brick building sank by almost two meters. However, the tent turned out to be standing in a pit. The resulting hole was constantly filled with water, and it was undermining the ancient foundation, because of which part of the wall was destroyed. Therefore, the excavated basement had to be buried again.
The restoration work was intermittently delayed until 1988. During them, the two upper floors of the building were removed, and the roof was given its original shape.

In subsequent years, the owners of the tent changed several times, and each of them started their own repairs. The sale of gold and fur coats was organized here, and later the local authorities opened a casino in the architectural monument of the 17th century. In 1988, the city museum of local lore exhibited inside the exhibition "Ivanovskaya antiquity". And in 2004, tall bushes already grew around the tent. The area around the building that was abandoned in those years was heavily littered, and vandals repeatedly knocked out windows and doors in the tent.
In 2010, a modern Art Square was built next to an ancient architectural monument. And inside the tent, on the initiative of the famous Ivanovo collector Yuri Marushkin, the first private museum in the region was organized, presenting the works of art of the Konakovsky faience factory. Initially, it was assumed that the collection would be on display on a permanent basis, but soon the museum switched to a mode of operation by appointment. This museum collection is now closed to visitors.

Architectural features of the monument
In Ivanovo, no more ancient civil buildings have survived than the Shchudrovskaya tent. The rectangular building is a hut with a passage, which were erected on the basement (semi-basement). The inner wall of the tent divides it into two rooms. The building is covered with a hipped roof. An entrance vestibule with a porch and a staircase is attached to the main facade overlooking Krasnogvardeyskaya street of the city.
Despite the utilitarian value and relatively small size, the tent is elegantly decorated. All its external decoration is made in brick Russian "pattern", typical for the middle of the 17th century. The "ceremonial" southeastern facade of the building is especially richly decorated. Small window openings with stepped slopes are framed with intricate figured platbands, which have various forms of completion. The border between the upper floor and the basement room is marked with an elegant curb band. The corners of the building are finished with flat pilasters. And the upper border of the walls is marked with a multi-stage cornice.
The current state of the architectural monument and the visiting regime
The Shchudrovskaya tent has been restored, and the area around this architectural monument is surrounded by an openwork fence. Today the tent has the status of a cultural heritage site of federal significance and is a department of the city museum of local lore. The main building of the museum is located very close to the Shchudrovskaya tent - 220 m, at the address: st. Sovetskaya, 29, and it is not difficult to reach it on foot. The museum is open from 11.00 to 17.30. Weekends are Monday and the last Friday of each month.
Anyone can view the architectural monument from the outside. They are not allowed inside the old building yet. However, in the local history museum you can book a walking tour of the city, which is led by the museum staff along the surrounding streets. During an hour's journey, the guides take you to the Shchudrovskaya tent and tell you about the history of its construction and use for print production. It is known that a tourist information center will soon be created on the basis of this architectural monument. This decision was recently made by the government of the Ivanovo region.
